Basic Economics: Needs, Wants, Work, and Resources

Economics appears naturally in elementary Social Studies. Children can understand that people have needs and wants, that goods and services are produced, that people work to earn income, and that resources are limited.

Scarcity is a particularly useful concept. If something people want is difficult to obtain, its value or price may be affected. Students can begin reasoning about choices and tradeoffs without needing advanced economic theory.

These ideas connect Social Studies with practical math, family life, and everyday decisions.

Try This in Your Homeschool

Give your child a small pretend budget and several possible purchases. Ask them to choose, explain what they give up, and distinguish goods from services.

Prices have many influences, so avoid treating scarcity as the only explanation. Focus first on limited resources and the need to make choices.

Use What You Learn to Plan Your Next Step

A useful review starts with what your child can explain independently and where support is still needed. See why identifying learning gaps matters, then choose a focused activity and check understanding again after time to practice.
